The existing wooden floor in the church had rotted due to missing window glass. All the windows had been vandalized over the years. My plan was to remove all the wood flooring and support joists, remove the stone supports under the joists, level and compact the soil, place and compact gravel base, place and compact sand, place plastic vapor barrier, place reinforcing steel and pour new concrete. This was a huge job and required 3 months of hard work. An opening in the rear stone wall (where the old vestry had been) was made. This allowed the digger and dumper to enter and exit the building, to do the excavation and placement of sand and gravel. All the rotted wooden floor material had to be loaded and hauled away, as well. The old floor was sloped from the entrance to the pulpit. This required the under floor soils to be leveled prior to placement of any gravel and sand. The water lines and drains had to be installed also, prior to placement of concrete. There were inches of dried bird poop on the old floor, which caused me to get a lung infection. Working for 3 weeks with a lung infection was no fun, as I constantly felt tired and weak, due to lack of oxygen. In the end, the new concrete was a huge change and improvement to the building.
This is what I started with
Wood floor removed
Removal of stone and leveling dirt
Placed and compacted gravel
Placed and compacted sand, also water lines and drains installed.
Installed plastic vapor barrier and reinforcing steel.
Concrete poured.
Also, all window glass panels removed(stained glass)
I still can't get over the beautiful stain glass windows.
Amazing......truly amazing. What an awesome adventure.
A another great job chalked off each mile stone must be so satisfying, when does the roof insulation and boarding begin?
Looks like things are progressing along very well. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more pictures soon.
By the way, the 50th reunion has been put off until September of 2021. I hope we can see you before then. Stay well.
